| Güstrow Castle (Schloss) is the most important Renaissance palace in northern Germany. It was built in 1558 on the site of the former medieval castle for the Duke of Mecklenburg. Much of the original building survives, with impressive wings extending away from the central building. It has been a museum since 1972, displaying many of the restored rooms including the wonderful banqueting hall, with its painted ceiling. In the vaults is a collection of medieval items, such as hunting weapons. There is also a large exhibition of works of art from the Schwerin Museum on display. |
